Douglas mining photographs, 1897-1898.

Photographs of mining activity and life in Bisbee, Nacozari, and Pina and Yavapai Counties. There are exterior and interior images of mine buildings as well as machinery, mines, and miners. There are also images of frontier life including adobe buildings, tents, pack mules and wagons, and cave interiors. The Planet, Senator, and Newton Mines are represented. Apache Indians from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation are shown gathering to receive rations in 1898. A series of photographs depicts crowds at the Southern Pacific Railroad depot in Tucson.

Walter Douglas was involved in the mining and railroad industries of Arizona throughout his life. From 1895 to 1899, he worked for the Detroit Copper Company. In 1899, he became superintendent of the Copper Queen Consolidated Company at Bisbee, then served as general manager from 1902 to 1910, and then was general manager for Phelps Dodge.
